Unibet in Iceland: Review & Alternatives (2026)

Unibet’s terms send mixed signals for Iceland. Iceland is not on the list of countries whose residents may not open an account (clause 3.1.3 b), but clause 13.10 names Iceland among the countries where “access to some Games may be restricted”, which covers the casino, games and live casino side. From an Icelandic IP address on 9 October 2026, the international site unibet.mt loaded with a Register button. The operator named in the terms is Rol Malta Ltd, under Malta Gaming Authority licence MGA/B2C/1031/2023, and Unibet has no Icelandic licence. We are not partners with Unibet, so this page has no links to it: it sets out what the terms say and then shows the betting sites we list as alternatives.

Can you sign up to Unibet from Iceland?

There is no clean yes or no, because the terms do not give one. Version 4.9 of the Unibet Terms and Conditions, last updated 28 September 2026 and read by us on 9 October 2026, has two country clauses. The first, clause 3.1.3 b, lists over a hundred countries whose residents may not open an account. Greenland, the Faroe Islands and the UK are on it; Iceland is not. The second is clause 13.10, under Casino, Games and Live Casino:

“Specific country exclusions: access to some Games may be restricted in the following countries: Albania, Antigua and Barbuda, Argentina, … Greece, Guinea, Guinea-Bissau, Iceland, India, … Norway, Poland, Portugal …” (Unibet Terms and Conditions, version 4.9, last updated 28/09/2026, read 9 October 2026)

Read together, the terms do not stop an Icelandic resident from applying for an account, but some casino and live-casino games may not be available to you. The clause does not say which games. Clause 3.1.3 l adds that you must not use the service if it is illegal or restricted where you live, and Unibet can refuse an application.

On Icelandic law: money gambling is allowed only under a special act, and only six domestic operators hold one. Players are not prosecuted in practice, but Unibet has no Icelandic licence and the law restricts promotion of unlicensed gambling. See what Icelandic law says about online gambling. Do not use a VPN to get past a location check: you must give your real place of residence.

Licence and who runs Unibet

Unibet was founded in 1997 and became the main brand of Kindred Group. French lottery operator FDJ completed its takeover of Kindred in October 2024 and renamed itself FDJ United in March 2025. Sweden, Denmark, the Netherlands and the UK get separate local sites; the international site runs on a Maltese licence.

The terms name Rol Malta Ltd as “Unibet” and quote licence MGA/B2C/1031/2023. When we checked the Malta Gaming Authority register on 9 October 2026, that licence number showed status “Licensed” under the name Kserol P.L.C., at the same Tigne Point address, covering casino, betting, poker and bingo, with eCOGRA as the dispute body and unibet.mt among the listed websites. We could not confirm from a primary source why the register and the terms show different company names.

An MGA licence gives you a European regulator and a free dispute route through eCOGRA. It does not make Unibet licensed in Iceland: Icelandic law recognises no foreign gambling licence.

Deposits, withdrawals and ID checks

  • Currency: unibet.mt runs in euros. The inactive-account clause (3.4.2) lists Unibet’s account currencies, from EUR to SEK, NOK and DKK; krónur are not among them.
  • Bank fees: Landsbankinn adds 2.30% to foreign-currency card payments (price list of 23 April 2026). At 137.0 kr. per euro (Central Bank of Iceland, 8 October 2026), €20 is 2,740 kr. before that.
  • Verification: Unibet will not pay out more than €2,000 before it has verified your identity, age and place of residence (clause 4.2).
  • Turnover rule: deposited money has to be wagered before you can withdraw it (clause 4.11).
  • Inactive accounts: after 12 months without a login, Unibet may charge EUR 5 a month, with 30 days’ notice first (3.4.2 and 3.4.3).

Bonus rules worth knowing

Each campaign has its own bonus terms, and bonuses can carry a “Turnaround Requirement” (wagering) before winnings from them can be withdrawn (clause 7.1.1). You get one bonus per campaign and one per user, IP address, device, household, card and email (7.1.3). We could not see a current offer for Icelandic visitors without registering, so we quote none. Our guide to betting sites for Iceland shows the odds, wagering and caps behind each sports offer we list.

Responsible gambling tools at Unibet

Clause 3.3.1 lets you set limits on what you deposit or wager over a chosen period, “depending on their country of residence”, and exclude yourself for a set time. Raising or removing a limit takes seven days (3.3.2). These controls cover Unibet only. Iceland has no national self-exclusion register, so a block at one site does not reach another. Our responsible gambling page covers bank blocks and other options.

A search of fjölmiðlanefnd’s website on 9 October 2026 found no decision naming Unibet.

Tax on Unibet winnings

In Iceland, winnings from bets and lotteries are taxable income under the Income Tax Act (lög 90/2003, 7. gr. A-liður 4. tölul.). Only the six Icelandic licensed operators and lotteries that give all their profit to good causes are exempt. Unibet is a commercial operator, so declare its winnings to Skatturinn. Winnings from Lengjan, the domestic sports product, are exempt; see our Lengjan guide.

Unibet compared with the betting sites we list

Point Unibet (unibet.mt) Betting sites in our list
Licence Malta (MGA) Anjouan (Comoros); none has an Icelandic licence
Iceland in the terms Accounts not barred; some casino games may be restricted (13.10) Iceland not on the restricted list; in the sign-up country list
Currency EUR, no ISK EUR, no ISK
Sports welcome offer Per campaign; not quoted here Packages up to 325% with 5x wagering at odds of 1.80 or more
Withdrawals Limits per method; ID check before payouts over €2,000 Minimum €100 (13,700 kr.), at most €1,000 a day and €10,000 a month

Unibet’s strengths are a long track record, a Maltese licence and the Kambi sportsbook. The sites we list are clearer about Iceland and publish their sports offers openly, at 5x wagering.

How we checked this page

On 9 October 2026 we loaded unibet.com, unibet.mt and the unibet.mt registration page through an Icelandic IP address, and read the Unibet Terms and Conditions, version 4.9 last updated 28 September 2026, including clauses 1.1, 2, 3.1.3, 3.3, 3.4, 4, 7, 9.1 and 13.10. We checked licence MGA/B2C/1031/2023 in the Malta Gaming Authority register, read FDJ United’s March 2025 announcement of its new name, and searched fjölmiðlanefnd’s website for Unibet. Gunnar Sigurðsson wrote the page and Helga Björnsdóttir checked the legal and tax points. We have no commercial relationship with Unibet.

Frequently asked questions

Does Unibet accept players from Iceland?

Not clearly either way. Unibet’s terms (version 4.9, 28 September 2026) do not list Iceland among the countries whose residents may not open an account (clause 3.1.3 b), but clause 13.10 names Iceland among countries where access to some casino games may be restricted. Unibet can also refuse an application.

Is Unibet licensed in Iceland?

No. Unibet’s international site is run under Malta Gaming Authority licence MGA/B2C/1031/2023. Iceland has no licence for online casinos or foreign betting operators, so no foreign site is licensed here.

Can I play at Unibet in krónur?

No ISK appears in Unibet’s terms, and the international site runs in euros. Expect a euro account and a currency fee from your bank (Landsbankinn charges 2.30% on foreign-currency card payments).

Are Unibet winnings taxable in Iceland?

Yes. Winnings from bets and casino games are taxable income under lög 90/2003, 7. gr. A-liður 4. tölul. Only Icelandic licensed operators and lotteries that give all profit to good causes are exempt.

No. Unibet is not a partner, so we cover it factually without links. The betting sites in our toplist are the alternatives we review and rank for Icelandic players.

Casino reviews, bonuses and games

Gunnar writes Iceland Casino's English casino reviews and bonus guides, and the pages on games such as slots and live casino. He starts every review with the casino's own terms rather than its promotion banner, and works out what a bonus costs to clear in euros and krónur before he calls it good value. He records the date he saw each offer, flags withdrawal caps and maximum-bet rules, and points out what a casino does not offer Icelandic players, such as ISK accounts. Every page he writes is checked by a second editor.
