The best betting sites for players in Iceland, among the brands we work with, are Trixino, Smash Casino, Wino Casino, Aphrodite Casino and Kingdom Casino: each runs a full sportsbook, and four of them have a separate sports welcome package with 5x wagering. We checked every offer on the operators’ own promotions pages on 8 October 2026 and read their shared terms line by line, because the small print on these betting sites (minimum odds of 1.80, a €2 stake cap while a bonus is active) matters more than the headline percentage.

Two facts first. Iceland licenses no private betting site: the only legal sportsbook here is Lengjan, run by Íslenskar getraunir. Every site below is licensed in Anjouan (Comoros), runs euro accounts only and has no Icelandic interface. Players are not prosecuted for betting abroad, but winnings from foreign sites are taxable income. Strictly 18+.

Trixino is run by Exceptiosoft LTD of Cyprus. Smash, Wino, Aphrodite and Kingdom belong to Softon Ltd, also registered in Cyprus. If you mostly play casino games rather than bet, our ranking of the best online casinos for Iceland compares the slots and live packages of all eight partner brands instead.

How we chose these betting sites

A brand made this list only if it met three tests on 8 October 2026:

  1. A working sportsbook. Each site has a sports section with football, tennis, basketball and ice hockey menus, live (in-play) markets and a published set of sportsbook rules.
  2. A sports offer you can actually use. We read each promotions page, not an affiliate feed. Three partner brands, Wildzy, Lucki Casino and Slottio, also have sportsbooks, but none showed a sports bonus that day (Slottio’s sports slot read “coming soon”), so they are not on this list.
  3. Open to Iceland. Iceland is not among the barred countries in clause 3.1.2 of the brands’ shared terms, dated 2 July 2026, and the operator country settings show Iceland as an active sign-up country with no krónur and no Icelandic language.

Smash’s sports package was read from a connection in the same platform zone as Iceland. The other four offers were read from the neighbouring EU zone. Where we compared both zones (Smash, Wildzy and Kingdom), the offers were identical, but treat every figure as “seen on 8 October 2026”.

We left out every non-partner bookmaker. You may know Coolbet, which is heavily advertised to Icelanders on social media and in podcasts; in 2022 the media committee fined Sýn ISK 1 million over Coolbet ads in a podcast on Vísir. Our Coolbet review for Iceland covers what that operator says about itself, without links to it.

Sports bonus rules on these betting sites

All five brands use the same general terms. Before you claim a sports bonus, know these clauses:

  • Minimum odds 1.80. Every bet must be placed at decimal odds of 1.80 or higher to count (clause 7.13). A bet at 1.75 counts for nothing and its winnings can be taken back.
  • €2 maximum stake. While any bonus is active, a single bet above €2 (about 274 kr.) breaks the bonus rules and can void the winnings (clause 7.16). That cap shapes how long it takes to clear a sports bonus.
  • Sports bonuses are for sports only. A sports bonus cannot be used on slots or live casino (clause 7.15), and sports bets do not count towards a casino bonus.
  • Winnings cap of 10x. The most you can win and withdraw from a sports bonus is ten times the bonus amount, unless the offer says otherwise.
  • One active bonus at a time, and the wagering basis (bonus only, or deposit plus bonus) is not stated on the promotions pages. Ask support before you accept.
  • Withdrawals: minimum €100 (13,700 kr.), maximum €1,000 a day and €10,000 a month (clause 6.13). Identity checks happen before the first payout.

A worked example: Trixino’s first sports deposit

Say you deposit €100 (13,700 kr. before card fees) and take the first sports bonus of 100% up to €500. You now have €200 to bet with, €100 of it bonus money.

  • If 5x applies to the bonus only, you must place €500 in qualifying bets. If it applies to deposit plus bonus, the figure is €1,000.
  • With the €2 stake cap, that means at least 250 bets in the first case and 500 in the second, each at odds of 1.80 or more.
  • A bookmaker’s margin of around 5% on that turnover costs you about €25 to €50 on average, so the bonus still has positive value on paper, but only if you are patient.
  • The most you can withdraw from the bonus is 10x €100, which is €1,000.

The lesson: on these sites a sports bonus suits a small-stakes bettor who likes many low-stake singles at odds around 2.00. If you bet €20 or €50 on a single match, skip the bonus and bet with cash. Our guide to bonus wagering requirements walks through the same maths for casino offers.

Betting on Icelandic football: Besta deildin

Besta deildin karla is Iceland’s top men’s division. Twelve clubs play each other twice over 22 rounds, then the league splits into a top six and a bottom six for five more rounds, so each club plays 27 matches between April and October. The format, in place since 2022, matters for betting: after the split, teams play opponents of similar strength, and late-season matches in the bottom group can carry relegation stakes while mid-table sides in the top group have little left to play for.

Some practical points for betting on Icelandic football from abroad:

  • Coverage varies. International sportsbooks price the big European leagues every week, but smaller leagues such as Besta deildin may appear with fewer markets, or only close to kick-off. Check the fixture list before you deposit for that purpose.
  • Cash-out is partial. The sportsbook rules (clause 2.8) offer cash-out on some markets only, and the site can withdraw it at any time, so do not plan a bet around it.
  • Integrity. Iceland’s football association has taken betting seriously: in April 2025 its chief executive said three players had been banned for betting in three years. The partner sites’ own rules (clause 2.9) also bar anyone taking part in an event, such as a player, coach or referee, from betting on it.

Lengjan, the licensed domestic product, covers Icelandic football in depth because that is its home market. More on Lengjan below.

Premier League betting from Iceland

The English Premier League has a huge following in Iceland, and Icelanders have played in it for decades, from Eiður Guðjohnsen at Chelsea to Gylfi Sigurðsson at Swansea, Tottenham and Everton. Íslenskar getraunir even runs a dedicated pools game, 1X2 Enski boltinn, on English football.

The league has 20 clubs and 380 matches a season, and every international sportsbook prices it heavily, with markets on the result, both teams to score, total goals, corners, cards and player shots. Because the Premier League is the most liquid league on these sites, it is also where bookmaker margins tend to be lowest, which helps when you are working through a bonus at odds of 1.80 or more. A typical match-result market might read home 2.10, draw 3.40, away 3.50, a combination that sits comfortably above the 1.80 floor on all three outcomes.

Football bets on these sites are settled on the result after 90 minutes including stoppage time, unless a market says otherwise; extra time and penalty shoot-outs do not count for match markets (sportsbook rules, section 3.15).

Handball: betting on Strákarnir okkar

Handball is where Iceland punches far above its size. The men’s national team, known at home as Strákarnir okkar (“our boys”), won Olympic silver in Beijing in 2008 and bronze at the 2010 European Championship, and its matches at the major tournaments, usually played in January, are followed closely across the country.

What changes when you bet on handball:

  • High scores, few draws. Handball matches regularly produce more than 50 goals combined, so totals and handicap markets are more popular than the three-way result.
  • Settlement on 60 minutes. Under the partner sites’ sportsbook rules (section 3.20), match markets are settled on the score after the regulation 60 minutes, excluding overtime, unless the market is “to qualify” or “to lift the trophy”. A tournament knockout match that goes to extra time can therefore settle as a draw.
  • Major tournaments only. Expect full market depth for European and World Championships and for the big club competitions; Icelandic club handball is far more likely to be covered by Lengjan than by an international sportsbook.

If you follow Iceland at a tournament, set a budget before the first match. Patriotic betting is one of the easiest ways to stake more than you planned.

Odds formats explained

All five betting sites show decimal odds by default, which is also the format used in Iceland. Decimal odds include your stake: a €10 bet at 2.50 returns €25, a profit of €15. Two other formats appear on British and American sites:

  • Fractional (UK): 3/2 means a profit of 3 for every 2 staked, the same as decimal 2.50.
  • American (moneyline): +150 means a profit of 150 on a 100 stake; −200 means you stake 200 to win 100.
Decimal Fractional American Implied probability
1.50 1/2 −200 66.7%
1.80 4/5 −125 55.6%
2.00 1/1 (evens) +100 50.0%
2.50 3/2 +150 40.0%
3.40 12/5 +240 29.4%
5.00 4/1 +400 20.0%

Implied probability is 1 divided by the decimal odds. Add up the implied probabilities of every outcome in a market and you see the bookmaker’s margin. In the example above (2.10 / 3.40 / 3.50), the three outcomes add up to 47.6% + 29.4% + 28.6% = 105.6%, so the margin is about 5.6%. Comparing that total across sites is the quickest way to see who prices a match more generously.

Note the 1.80 row: it is the minimum odds for a sports bonus on all five sites, which rules out heavy favourites. If you prefer short-priced singles, bet without a bonus.

Lengjan: the domestic licensed option

Lengjan is Iceland’s own sports betting product. It is run by Íslenskar getraunir, which operates under the Act on Betting Pools no. 59/1972; the act also prohibits sports betting by anyone without a statutory licence. Getraunir’s profit goes to Icelandic sport: 70% to the National Olympic and Sports Association (ÍSÍ), 20% to the Youth Association (UMFÍ) and 10% to the State Sports Committee. Since lengjan.is now redirects to the shared Getspá and Getraunir platform at games.lotto.is, you play Lengjan with the same account as Lottó.

How Lengjan differs from the foreign sites above:

  • Licensed and tax-free. It is the only sportsbook with an Icelandic licence, and its winnings are exempt from public charges under the 1972 act.
  • Krónur and Icelandic. No currency conversion and no card FX premium.
  • Built-in limits. Getraunir caps play at 150,000 kr. a day by default, lets you set lower deposit and stake limits, and offers self-exclusion for up to three years. The minimum age is 18, online and in shops.
  • Fewer bonuses. Lengjan does not run welcome packages like the offshore sites.

We have no commercial relationship with Lengjan and do not link to it. If a licensed, tax-free product in krónur matters most to you, it is the obvious choice.

The short answer: only for the licensed domestic operators. Article 2 of the Lotteries Act no. 38/2005 bans any gambling for money unless a specific act authorises it, and only six bodies hold such an authorisation (Íslensk getspá, Íslenskar getraunir, the University of Iceland Lottery HHÍ, DAS, SÍBS and Íslandsspil). No licence exists for foreign or private betting sites, so the sites in our list are licensed abroad and have no Icelandic licence.

For players, the position is different from the operators’. No provision makes it a crime to place a bet with a foreign site, and the Justice Minister told Alþingi in September 2025 that Iceland has no specialised supervision of foreign betting. According to the National Police Commissioner, 14 gambling and betting matters reached the police in five years and none led to an investigation (RÚV, 21 October 2025). Promotion is a different matter: article 11 of the same act restricts advertising of unlicensed gambling, and Icelandic media have been fined ISK 1 million twice for betting ads (Sýn in 2022, Síminn in 2025).

No reform is in force or on the 2026-27 legislative agenda: no payment blocking, no website blocking and no licensing bill. Our page on whether online gambling is legal in Iceland quotes the sections in full.

Euro accounts, card fees and krónur

None of the five betting sites offers Icelandic krónur. When you register from Iceland, the account opens in euros and every deposit is converted by your bank or card issuer. Three things follow:

  • Card FX premium. Landsbankinn adds 2.30% to the Visa wholesale rate on foreign-currency card payments (price list 23 April 2026). On a €100 deposit at 137.0 kr. per euro, that is about 315 kr. on top of 13,700 kr.
  • Payment methods. Trixino takes Visa, Mastercard, Google Pay and Revolut. The Softon brands add Amex and crypto. Icelandic payment apps such as Aur, Netgíró and Pei are not accepted.
  • Revolut helps. A Revolut account in euros avoids the double conversion when you deposit and withdraw in euros.

Our guide to euro casinos for Icelanders has worked examples of the conversion costs, and the crypto casino guide explains which brands take cryptocurrency.

Tax on betting winnings in Iceland

Winnings from the six licensed Icelandic operators, Lengjan included, are exempt under their special acts. Winnings from foreign betting sites are a different story: article 7 A 4 of the Income Tax Act no. 90/2003 lists “winnings in a lottery, bet or competition” as taxable income, and the exemption in article 30 covers only licensed lotteries whose profit goes entirely to good causes. Commercial offshore sportsbooks do not qualify. Whether losses can be set against winnings is not settled in the act, so ask Skatturinn if you win a meaningful sum. Never trust a betting site that calls its winnings “tax-free” for Icelanders.

Bet safely: limits and help

Online betting is the fastest-growing form of gambling in Iceland. Icelandic cards spent about ISK 18 billion at foreign betting sites in 2024 (Statistics Iceland via RÚV), and an MP told Alþingi in 2025 that 86% of people seeking SÁÁ’s gambling treatment gamble online. Live betting on a match you are watching is where losses build fastest.

  • Decide a monthly amount in krónur before you deposit, and remember the euro conversion.
  • Use deposit limits and time-outs in the account settings. Iceland has no national self-exclusion register, so you must exclude yourself at each site separately.
  • Never chase losses with a bigger stake, and do not take a bonus that makes you play longer than you intended.

Help is free and confidential: SÁÁ 530-7600 (free gambling treatment programme, email [email protected]), the Red Cross helpline 1717 (24/7, free, anonymous, also web chat) and Gamblers Anonymous 698-3888. In an emergency, call 112. Our responsible gambling guide covers the warning signs and every tool available in Iceland.

How we checked this page

On 8 October 2026 we read the promotions pages of all eight partner brands and the sports bonus settings in their page data (Smash as a visitor from Iceland’s platform zone, the others from the neighbouring EU zone), their shared general terms dated 2 July 2026 (clauses 3.1.2, 6.13, 7.13, 7.15 and 7.16), and the sportsbook rules document the sites publish (sections 3.15 and 3.20). Law references were checked against the consolidated Alþingi texts, version 158a of 1 October 2026: the Lotteries Act 38/2005, the Betting Pools Act 59/1972 and the Income Tax Act 90/2003. Lengjan’s limits and age rule come from its responsible-gaming page on games.lotto.is. The exchange rate is the Central Bank’s mid rate for 8 October 2026 and the card fee comes from Landsbankinn’s price list of 23 April 2026. Helpline numbers were checked on each organisation’s own website. Written by Gunnar Sigurðsson, fact-checked by Helga Björnsdóttir.

Frequently asked questions

What are the best betting sites for players in Iceland?

Among our partner sites, Trixino, Smash Casino, Wino Casino, Aphrodite Casino and Kingdom Casino all run a sportsbook and had a sports offer on 8 October 2026. Smash has the largest sports welcome package (250% up to €5,000) and Trixino pairs a 325% package with an operator named in its own settings. None of them holds an Icelandic licence, because Iceland issues none to private betting sites.

Is online sports betting allowed in Iceland?

Only Íslenskar getraunir may run sports betting in Iceland, which it does through Lengjan under Act 59/1972. Foreign betting sites have no Icelandic licence and the Justice Minister calls their activity aimed at Icelanders unlawful. No law makes it a crime for a player to bet, and police opened no investigation into any of 14 gambling matters reported in five years (RÚV, October 2025).

What minimum odds apply to sports bonuses on these sites?

The shared terms (clause 7.13) say each bet must be placed at decimal odds of at least 1.80 to count towards the bonus. Bets below 1.80 do not count and winnings from them can be confiscated. While a bonus is active, the maximum stake is €2 per bet (clause 7.16).

Can I bet in Icelandic krónur?

No. None of our partner betting sites offers ISK, so the account runs in euros and your card issuer converts the money. Landsbankinn, for example, adds a 2.30% premium on foreign-currency card payments (price list 23 April 2026). At 137.0 kr. per euro, a €50 deposit is about 6,850 kr. before any fee.

Are betting winnings tax-free in Iceland?

Only winnings from the licensed Icelandic operators, such as Lengjan, are exempt under their special acts. Winnings from foreign betting sites count as taxable income under article 7 A 4 of the Income Tax Act 90/2003.

Can I bet on Besta deildin and Icelandic handball?

Lengjan offers Icelandic football and handball. Our partner sportsbooks list football and handball among their sports and their rules cover handball markets, but coverage of individual Icelandic leagues changes from week to week, so check the fixture list before you deposit.

Where can I get help if betting is becoming a problem?

Call SÁÁ on 530-7600 (free gambling treatment programme), the Red Cross helpline 1717 (24/7, free and anonymous) or Gamblers Anonymous on 698-3888. In an emergency, call 112.

Gunnar writes Iceland Casino's English casino reviews and bonus guides, and the pages on games such as slots and live casino. He starts every review with the casino's own terms rather than its promotion banner, and works out what a bonus costs to clear in euros and krónur before he calls it good value. He records the date he saw each offer, flags withdrawal caps and maximum-bet rules, and points out what a casino does not offer Icelandic players, such as ISK accounts.
