PokerStars accepts players from Iceland according to its own rules: Iceland is not on its list of prohibited jurisdictions, and its real-money deposit page lists Iceland as a supported country. Icelandic players are served by TSG Interactive Gaming Europe Limited in Malta, licensed by the Malta Gaming Authority under MGA/B2C/213/2011. Like every foreign gambling site, PokerStars has no Icelandic licence. We are not partners with PokerStars, so there are no links to it here, only facts and the casinos we list as alternatives.

PokerStars is first and foremost a poker room, with a casino and sportsbook alongside. The facts below come from its General Terms (version 1.5, in force from 27 July 2026) and its own pages, read on 9 October 2026 through an Icelandic connection.

Can you sign up to PokerStars from Iceland?

Yes, on PokerStars’ own terms. Section 9.1 of the General Terms says people in “Prohibited Jurisdictions” must not deposit, play real-money games or use the service, and it links to a list that “may change from time to time”. On 9 October 2026 that list named dozens of countries, including Norway, Poland, the Netherlands, Czech Republic, Latvia, Australia and the United States (except where locally licensed). Iceland was not on it. The real-money deposits page, which asks you to “choose your country” to see payment options, includes Iceland in its menu, and an Icelandic connection got the full pokerstars.com site with a working Join button.

Clause 6.1.6 adds that you must “ensure that your use of the Services is lawful in your jurisdiction”, and clause 9.2 calls any attempt to get round location rules, including by VPN, a serious breach. Our guide on whether online gambling is legal in Iceland explains the Icelandic side: money gambling needs a special act of parliament, no foreign operator holds one, and players have not been prosecuted for playing abroad.

Licence and who runs PokerStars

The licence in the terms and footer, MGA/B2C/213/2011, belongs to TSG Interactive Gaming Europe Limited, part of Flutter Group. The Malta Gaming Authority’s register lists it as “Licensed”, with pokerstars.com among the approved domains. Several countries have their own locally licensed PokerStars sites (.uk, .se, .dk and others); Iceland does not, so Icelandic players use the Maltese .com operation.

An MGA licence means a European regulator supervises the operator’s systems, money-laundering checks and segregated player funds. It does not make PokerStars licensed in Iceland, which recognises no foreign gambling licence. For disputes, section 19 of the terms sends you to PokerStars’ support, then to the ADR body eCOGRA.

Deposits, withdrawals and ID checks

  • Deposit limits first: under clause 10.1 you have to set daily, weekly and monthly deposit limits when you open an account.
  • Minimum deposit: the deposits page quotes a $10 minimum unless stated otherwise. At the Central Bank of Iceland rate of 137.0 kr. per euro (8 October 2026), a €10 deposit is 1,370 kr.
  • Currency: PokerStars’ pages quote dollars, euros, pounds and Canadian dollars; we saw no krónur. Your bank adds its own fee: Landsbankinn charges a 2.30% premium on foreign-currency card payments (price list of 23 April 2026).
  • ID checks: once you deposit EUR 2,000 or more in any rolling 180-day period, PokerStars always verifies your identity and address before paying out.
  • Withdrawals: possible at any time, even while self-excluded (clause 11.1).
  • Inactive accounts: after at least 13 months without use, PokerStars charges EUR 5 a month, with 30 days’ notice first.

The PokerStars welcome offer

The poker welcome offer shown to an Icelandic visitor on 9 October 2026 was a 100% first-deposit bonus with code STARS600: up to $600, €500 (68,500 kr.), £400 or C$600 on a first deposit of at least $10 or €10. You release it in $5 steps by earning redemption points from rake and tournament fees (75 points per $5) within four months. The offer has run since 26 July 2021. For how release-by-rake compares with casino wagering, see our casino bonus guide.

Safer gambling tools

Besides the mandatory deposit limits, PokerStars offers table and tournament limits, game blocks and self-exclusion. These cover PokerStars only; Iceland has no national self-exclusion register. Our responsible gambling guide covers the tools to look for anywhere.

PokerStars in the Icelandic news

In opinion 1/2014 of 5 March 2014, fjölmiðlanefnd (the Media Commission) found that 365 miðlar ehf. breached article 37(4) of the Media Act (lög 38/2011) by showing PokerStars.com adverts on Stöð 2 Sport 2, after a complaint from Íslenskar getraunir. The case concerned the broadcaster, not PokerStars’ licence.

Tax on PokerStars winnings

Clause 8.2 of PokerStars’ terms leaves tax to you. In Iceland, winnings from bets and games are taxable income (lög 90/2003, 7. gr. A-liður 4. tölul.). The exemptions cover the six Icelandic special-act operators and lotteries licensed in Iceland or elsewhere in the EEA whose whole profit goes to good causes (30. gr.). A commercial operator such as PokerStars meets neither condition, so declare its winnings to Skatturinn.

PokerStars compared with the casinos we list

To be clear: the casinos in our list have no poker rooms, so they are no substitute for PokerStars’ poker tables. They are alternatives to its casino side: slots, table games and live dealers.

Point PokerStars Casinos in our list
Licence Malta (MGA) Anjouan (Comoros); none licensed in Iceland
Focus Poker first, plus casino and sports Casino first; no poker room
Currency USD, EUR, GBP, CAD; no ISK seen Euro accounts only, no ISK

The MGA licence is a stronger regulatory story than Anjouan. Our listed casinos stand out on low wagering: Trixino’s slots package carries 7x and Wildzy’s 10x. Watch their €1,000-a-day withdrawal cap.

How we checked this page

On 9 October 2026 we loaded pokerstars.com through an Icelandic connection and read its General Terms (version 1.5, in force from 27 July 2026; clauses 6.1, 8.2, 9.1, 9.2, 10.1, 11.1 and 19), the prohibited-jurisdictions page those terms link to, the real-money deposits page with its country menu, and the first-deposit bonus terms. We checked the licence on the Malta Gaming Authority’s register and read fjölmiðlanefnd’s opinion 1/2014. Gunnar Sigurðsson wrote the page and Helga Björnsdóttir checked the legal and tax points. We have no commercial relationship with PokerStars.

Frequently asked questions

Does PokerStars accept players from Iceland?

Yes, according to PokerStars itself. Iceland was not on its prohibited-jurisdictions list when we checked on 9 October 2026, and its real-money deposit page lists Iceland as a country.

Is PokerStars licensed in Iceland?

No. Icelandic players are served by TSG Interactive Gaming Europe Ltd under Malta Gaming Authority licence MGA/B2C/213/2011. Iceland licenses no online casinos or foreign operators.

Can I play PokerStars in Icelandic krónur?

We found no ISK option. PokerStars quotes dollars, euros, pounds and Canadian dollars, so expect a foreign-currency account and a bank fee (Landsbankinn adds 2.30% to foreign-currency card payments).

What is the PokerStars welcome bonus in Iceland?

On 9 October 2026 an Icelandic visitor saw a 100% first-deposit bonus up to $600 or €500 with code STARS600, released in $5 steps as you earn redemption points from rake within four months.

Are PokerStars winnings taxable in Iceland?

Yes. Winnings from bets and games are taxable income under lög 90/2003, 7. gr. The exemptions cover Iceland’s special-act operators and licensed charity lotteries in Iceland or the EEA, not a commercial operator like PokerStars.

Do the casinos on this page have poker rooms?

No. The casinos we list are casino-first sites without player-versus-player poker. They are alternatives to PokerStars’ casino games, not to its poker tables.

About the author

Gunnar Sigurðsson

Casino reviews, bonuses and games

Gunnar writes Iceland Casino's English casino reviews and bonus guides, and the pages on games such as slots and live casino. He starts every review with the casino's own terms rather than its promotion banner, and works out what a bonus costs to clear in euros and krónur before he calls it good value. He records the date he saw each offer, flags withdrawal caps and maximum-bet rules, and points out what a casino does not offer Icelandic players, such as ISK accounts. Every page he writes is checked by a second editor.
