bet365 in Iceland: Review & Alternatives (2026)

Can you use bet365 in Iceland? What its terms v2.07 say, the MGA licence, ID and currency rules, Nordic licences, tax and betting alternatives (Oct 2026).

bet365’s own terms do not bar players in Iceland. Iceland is not named anywhere in its general terms (version 2.07, effective 28 September 2026), and when we loaded bet365.com through an Icelandic IP address on 9 October 2026 we got the normal international sportsbook with “Join” and “Log In” buttons, not a block page. The sportsbook is run by Hillside (Sports) ENC in Malta under Malta Gaming Authority licence MGA/CRP/531/2018. Like every foreign gambling site, bet365 has no Icelandic licence, and its terms put the question of whether you may use it squarely on you. We are not partners with bet365, so this page has no links to it: it sets out the facts and then shows the betting sites we do list as alternatives.

With about 14,800 Google searches a month, “bet365” is the biggest gambling search in Iceland, well ahead of Coolbet. Most of those searches come from people looking for the login page. If you already know bet365, the useful parts below are the eligibility clause, the currency and ID rules, and the tax point. Everything comes from bet365’s terms, read on 9 October 2026, and from the regulators’ own registers.

bet365 at a glance

Item What we found (9 October 2026)
Sportsbook operator Hillside (Sports) ENC, a Maltese partnership (registration P1811), Office 1/2373, Level G, Quantum House, 75 Abate Rigord Street, Ta’ Xbiex
Casino, live casino and poker Hillside (Gaming) ENC (P1812), same address
Licences MGA/CRP/531/2018 (sports) and MGA/CRP/531/2018-02 (gaming), both issued 29 January 2021 according to the terms
MGA register Hillside (Sports) ENC listed as “Licensed”, B2C gaming service licence, website bet365.com
Iceland in the terms Not mentioned; the general terms contain no list of barred countries (clause 4.3 leaves legality to the player)
Icelandic IP check International sportsbook loads with Join and Log In
Icelandic licence None (no Icelandic online gambling licence exists)
ID checks Identity checks at €2,000 in cumulative deposits over a rolling 180 days, or earlier (clause 6.2)
Disputes Internal complaints, then eCOGRA; complaints can also go to the MGA (clause 29.2)
Minimum age 18

Can you sign up to bet365 from Iceland?

Nothing in bet365’s terms stops you. Clause 4.2 lists the eligibility rules: you must be over 18, act for yourself, not be self-excluded, hold only one account, and not have had an account closed by the bet365 group before. Country of residence is not on that list. The only country rule is clause 4.3, which we quote in full:

“Access and/or use of the Services may be illegal for people who are residents of, or are located in, certain countries. You are solely responsible for determining whether your access and/or use of the Services is prohibited by applicable laws in your home country or (if different) in your location and you may not access and/or use the Services if this is the case.” (bet365 General Terms and Conditions, version 2.07, effective 28/09/2026, read 9 October 2026)

So bet365 does not decide for you. Icelandic law allows money gambling only under a special act, and only six domestic operators hold one; bet365 is not among them. No law makes it a crime simply to place a bet with a foreign site, and players are not prosecuted in practice, but the operator holds no Icelandic licence and the law restricts promotion of unlicensed gambling. Our page on what Icelandic law says about online gambling goes through the statutes. Do not try to get round a location check with a VPN: bet365’s terms let it void bets and withhold funds when its rules are broken.

Two things we could not see without opening an account: the currency list at registration, and whether an Icelandic-language version exists. The site we saw was in English. Clause 10.7 says that once a currency is selected, deposits, bets and winnings stay in it, so check the options on the sign-up form. If krónur are not offered, a euro account plus your bank’s conversion fee is the likely result.

Licence and who runs bet365

bet365 is a British group headquartered in Stoke-on-Trent, but the international site that Icelandic visitors reach is run from Malta. The terms split the business in two: Hillside (Sports) ENC for the sportsbook and Hillside (Gaming) ENC for casino, live casino and poker. We checked the Malta Gaming Authority register on 9 October 2026. It lists Hillside (Sports) ENC at the Ta’ Xbiex address with licence MGA/CRP/531/2018, status “Licensed”, covering fixed-odds and live betting, casino, poker and controlled skill games, with bet365.com as its website and eCOGRA as its approved dispute body.

An MGA licence means a European regulator supervises the operator’s systems, anti-money-laundering checks and player funds. Clause 10.5 says player money sits in separate designated customer bank accounts that the bank has acknowledged are held only for players. It does not make bet365 licensed in Iceland. Gambling is not covered by any EEA-wide licence, and Icelandic law recognises no foreign gambling licence.

bet365 and the Nordic markets

In the Nordics, bet365 takes a local licence where one is on offer. Iceland and Norway have none to give.

  • Sweden: Spelinspektionen’s licence register (downloaded 9 October 2026) lists Hillside (Europe) ENC with active licences for commercial online gambling and for betting on bet365.com, valid 1 January 2024 to 31 December 2028.
  • Denmark: Spillemyndigheden lists Hillside (New Media Malta) Plc (Bet365) with licences for online casino and betting on bet365.dk, also marked as licensed in Greenland.
  • Swedish sanctions: in June 2019 Spelinspektionen gave the sportsbook company a warning and a SEK 10,000,000 sanction fee for taking bets on five U19 football matches where most players were under 18. In March 2021 it added a remark and a SEK 1,000,000 fee over betting on another match with under-18 players (decision 20Si1037).
  • Norway and Iceland: both keep their markets closed to commercial operators, so there is no licence for bet365 to hold. Norway goes further than Iceland: it has banned payments to unlicensed gambling since 2010 and has DNS-blocked such sites since 1 January 2025. Iceland has neither measure.

Finland opens a licensed market on 1 July 2027. Whether bet365 has applied there we could not confirm from a primary source.

Deposits, withdrawals and ID checks

  • Card fees: bet365 does not charge for card deposits (clause 10.4), but it warns that some card issuers treat betting as a cash payment and may add a cash-advance fee. Check this with your card issuer before you use a credit card.
  • Currency conversion: if your account is not in krónur, your bank converts each payment. Landsbankinn adds 2.30% to foreign-currency card payments (price list of 23 April 2026). At the Central Bank of Iceland mid rate of 137.0 kr. per euro on 8 October 2026, a €50 deposit is 6,850 kr. before that premium.
  • Verification: identity checks at €2,000 in cumulative deposits within a rolling 180 days, or earlier if bet365 asks (clause 6.2). A withdrawal waits until the checks are complete (11.1).
  • Your own payment methods only: deposits must come from a source in your name (10.3), and withdrawals go only to the registered account holder (11.2).
  • Maximum winnings: bet365 caps what you can be paid, however much you stake (11.5). The limits sit on a separate page and vary by product and market.
  • Dormant accounts: after 365 days without a deposit, bet or game, and at least 30 days after a notice, bet365 deducts €2 a month or 5% of the balance, whichever is greater (9.4).

Bonus rules worth knowing

Section 13 covers offers in general terms: free bets, bet credits, spins and cashback, limited to one per person, and bet365 may withdraw or change an offer at any time. Specific offers depend on the market and change often. We could not see one aimed at Icelandic visitors without registering, so we quote none here. When you compare sports bonuses, look at the minimum odds, the wagering and the expiry rather than the headline figure. Our guide to betting sites for Iceland shows those numbers for every offer we list.

Responsible gambling tools at bet365

Clause 25.2 lists a budget calculator, deposit limits, reality checks, an activity tracker, time-out, self-exclusion and gambling blocks. Those tools work only inside bet365. Iceland has no national self-exclusion register, so a block at one site does not stop you at another. For a wider block, ask your bank whether it can stop gambling payments, and see our responsible gambling page.

bet365 and Iceland’s media rules

We searched fjölmiðlanefnd’s website on 9 October 2026 for “bet365” and found no decision or opinion naming it. The rule behind those cases still applies: the Media Act bars registered Icelandic media from carrying commercial communications for betting that is not licensed in Iceland, and the committee fined Sýn hf. ISK 1,000,000 in 2022 over Coolbet promotion in a Vísir podcast.

Tax on bet365 winnings

bet365 makes you responsible for reporting winnings and losses to the authorities where you live (clause 14.11). In Iceland, winnings from bets and lotteries are taxable income under the Income Tax Act (lög 90/2003, 7. gr. A-liður 4. tölul.). The exemption covers the six Icelandic licensed operators and lotteries that give all profit to good causes. bet365 is a commercial operator, so its winnings do not qualify, even with an EEA licence. Declare them to Skatturinn.

Winnings from Lengjan, the sports betting product of Íslenskar getraunir, are exempt from public charges under its own act. Our guide to Lengjan explains how the domestic option works.

bet365’s MGA licence and range of markets are real strengths, and we say so. Check the withdrawal caps before you chase a big package.

How we checked this page

On 9 October 2026 we loaded bet365.com and its help-centre terms through an Icelandic IP address and read the General Terms and Conditions, version 2.07 effective 28 September 2026, including clauses 2.1, 4.2, 4.3, 6.2, 9.4, 10, 11, 13, 14.11, 25.2 and 29. We checked Hillside (Sports) ENC in the Malta Gaming Authority register, downloaded Spelinspektionen’s licence register, read its decision 20Si1037 of 22 March 2021, read Hillside (New Media Malta) Plc’s entry with Spillemyndigheden, and searched fjölmiðlanefnd’s website for bet365. Law references are to lög 38/2005 and lög 90/2003 on althingi.is. Gunnar Sigurðsson wrote the page and Helga Björnsdóttir checked the legal and tax points. We have no commercial relationship with bet365.

Frequently asked questions

Does bet365 accept players from Iceland?

bet365’s general terms (version 2.07, effective 28 September 2026) do not name Iceland or list barred countries. Clause 4.3 leaves it to you to check whether using bet365 is allowed where you live, and on 9 October 2026 bet365.com loaded normally from an Icelandic IP address with Join and Log In buttons.

Is bet365 licensed in Iceland?

No. The sportsbook is run by Hillside (Sports) ENC under Malta Gaming Authority licence MGA/CRP/531/2018. Iceland has no licence for online casinos or foreign betting operators, so no foreign site, bet365 included, is licensed here.

Can I use krónur at bet365?

We could not confirm it. bet365’s terms say you choose a currency at registration and keep it, but they do not list the currencies. If ISK is not offered, expect a euro account and a conversion fee from your bank (Landsbankinn charges 2.30% on foreign-currency card payments).

Are bet365 winnings taxable in Iceland?

Yes. Winnings from bets are taxable income under lög 90/2003, 7. gr. A-liður 4. tölul. Only the six Icelandic licensed operators and lotteries that give all profit to good causes are exempt, and bet365 is neither.

When does bet365 ask for ID?

Under clause 6.2 of its terms, bet365 runs identity checks once your deposits reach €2,000 within a rolling 180 days, and it may check earlier. Withdrawals wait until the checks are complete.

Does bet365 hold licences in other Nordic countries?

Yes. Sweden’s licence register lists Hillside (Europe) ENC for bet365.com (valid to 31 December 2028), and Denmark’s Spillemyndigheden lists Hillside (New Media Malta) Plc for bet365.dk. Norway and Iceland offer no licences to commercial operators.

No. bet365 is not a partner, so we cover it factually without links. The betting sites in our toplist are the alternatives we review and rank for Icelandic players.

Gunnar Sigurðsson

Casino reviews, bonuses and games

Gunnar writes Iceland Casino's English casino reviews and bonus guides, and the pages on games such as slots and live casino. He starts every review with the casino's own terms rather than its promotion banner, and works out what a bonus costs to clear in euros and krónur before he calls it good value. He records the date he saw each offer, flags withdrawal caps and maximum-bet rules, and points out what a casino does not offer Icelandic players, such as ISK accounts. Every page he writes is checked by a second editor.
